Independence is an important part of a person’s wellbeing, confidence, and quality of life. For a person with disability, independence does not mean they have to do everything on their own. It means they are supported to make choices, learn new skills, and take part in everyday life in ways that are meaningful, and suited to their needs. Independence looks different for everyone. For one person, it may mean learning to prepare breakfast. For another, it may mean joining a community activity, or living on their own. NDIS disability supports play an important role in promoting independence in the lives of people with disabilities and increase a participant’s ‘choice and control’ over their supports.
In the NDIS, independence is often supported through capacity building supports. These supports help a participant build skills over time so they can become more confident in daily life. This may include learning how to plan meals, manage personal care, communicate needs, make decisions, use public transport, manage emotions, or take part in work, study, or community activities. Capacity building supports are about helping the participant grow their ability for the future. Supported Independent Living (SIL) is another NDIS support that can help participants live as independently as possible. SIL may be suitable for participants who need regular help at home with daily tasks. This home and living support can include assistance with cooking, cleaning, personal care, medication routines, and building household skills. The aim is to support the participant to be involved in their home and daily decisions. Therapies can also play an important role in building independence. An occupational therapist may help a participant develop daily living routines or recommend equipment that makes tasks easier. A behaviour support practitioner may help the participant build confidence, emotional regulation, and positive routines. These NDIS supports can give the participant more control over their life.
