What Makes Disability Accommodation Feel Like Home?

Aastha Community Services

The quality of disability accommodation is shaped by more than accessibility, location or the physical design of the property. These elements are important, but the accommodation needs to make the participants feel at home.  For NDIS participants, feeling at home can come from having choice over daily routines, maintaining familiar habits, and being supported in a way that respects their privacy and
individual choices. This is particularly important in shared or supported disability accommodation, where thoughtful support and personal choice can make a significant difference to how a person experiences their home.  Feeling at home also comes from being able to make everyday decisions.

Good disability support accommodation should make room for individual routines wherever possible. People have different preferences around food, sleep, socialising, household activities and personal space. A home feels more natural when those differences are recognised rather than replaced by one routine for everyone. Maintaining familiar routines can make the transition into a new home easier and help the participant feel more settled. Support workers are often present during very ordinary parts of the day in disability accommodations. They prepare breakfast, complete household tasks, get the participants ready to go out or help the residents spend a quiet afternoon at home. The way support is provided during these moments can influence how comfortable and respected a person feels at home.

A person’s sense of home is also connected to the relationships and places that are important to them. When someone moves into disability accommodation, maintaining these connections can help preserve continuity in everyday life. There is no standard way of creating a home that feels right. Reliable and experienced accommodation service providers begin with understanding the individual rather than deciding what their home should look like for them. They work together with the participant and their family to build a home together.
At Aastha Community Services, we understand that the right disability accommodation should make the participant feel at home.
