A suitable living environment supports daily routines, personal choice, and meaningful participation in
home and community life. For people with disability, the right home is about having a space that supports
independence, stability, and dignity. Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS funded support that
helps a person with disability live as independently as possible, while receiving the right level of support
to stay safe and live independently. SIL funding is for disability-related personal support that helps a
participant live in their home, not for the cost of the building or everyday living expenses. Housing is
usually arranged separately through renting, owning a home, living with family or through Specialist
Disability Accommodation if a participant is eligible.
Once suitable housing is in place, SIL support can be delivered. It can include help or supervision with daily
tasks, such as personal care, preparing meals, cleaning, developing routines, taking medication, and building skills for everyday living. A good SIL home supports both current needs and future goals, so the person can keep developing independence over time. A reliable and experienced SIL service provider should be able to deliver support in a way that fits the participant’s usual routine and responds to changes when they happen.
It is also important that the support provided in the SIL home also works well with other supports in the
participant’s plan, including activities outside the home such as work, study, and social participation. The
quality and consistency of support workers also matter. A great SIL home is equipped with support workers
who understand the participant’s needs, follow any relevant plans such as behaviour support plans, and
provide support in a safe and respectful way. When a participant needs higher levels of support, it is
important that the provider has workers with the right skills and experience to deliver that support.
As a registered NDIS SIL service provider, Aastha Community Services believe that a great SIL home is one where the living environment and the quality of support work together to promote safety, independence, and long-term wellbeing of the participants. The focus is on providing reliable, day-to-day support that fits naturally into each person’s routine and responds to their individual needs. Through clear service agreements, efficient staffing, and clear communication with participants and their families, Aastha Community Services supports people to live comfortably in their SIL homes and maintain stability as their needs and goals evolve.
