Supported Independent Living vs Living Alone: Finding the Right Choice for You

Choosing where and how to live is a deeply personal decision. For people with disabilities, the choice often involves more than finding a suitable home. Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS funded home and living support that gives the participant ‘choice and control’ over such decisions.

SIL may include help with personal care, preparing meals, cleaning, taking medication, building routines, developing social skills and staying safe at home. The purpose is not simply to complete tasks for you. Quality SIL support should encourage you to participate, build practical skills and become as independent as possible. SIL is often provided in a shared home with other NDIS participants. Support workers may assist several residents at certain times while also providing individual support when required. In some circumstances, SIL may also be available to a participant who lives alone, depending on their assessed needs and NDIS funding. On the other hand, living alone can offer privacy, control and the freedom to create a home environment that is entirely one’s own. For participants with lower or more flexible support needs, living alone may work well with supports such as personal care, community participation, assistive technology or home modifications. Support workers can visit at agreed times to help with particular activities without being present throughout the day. Still, living alone also involves greater responsibility. You may need to manage household tasks, appointments, safety concerns and unexpected situations without immediate assistance from anyone.
