Supported Independent Living represents a significant step in a participant’s NDIS journey. When
the need for reliable disability support, skill development, and independent living outcomes align, SIL
support can help a participant achieve greater independence and quality of life. Supported Independent
Living (SIL) is a specific type of NDIS-funded home and living support designed for participants with
higher support needs and require assistance with daily living tasks in their home. It focuses on enabling
participants to live as independently as possible while receiving dependable disability support and care.
Recognising whether you are ready for SIL support involves understanding both your functional
capacity and your long-term home and living goals. Yu should include supported independent living
support in your NDIS plan if you feel the need for ongoing, person-to-person support across most aspects
of your daily life. This may include assistance with personal care, meal preparation, medication
management, or maintaining a safe living environment. When a participant requires these supports for the
majority of the day and some level of assistance overnight, SIL becomes a more appropriate and
sustainable support option compared to less intensive supports. Readiness for SIL is also reflected in a
participant’s capacity and willingness to build independent living skills. SIL is a capacity-building
support that aims to improve skills in areas such as cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene, and routine
development. Participants who demonstrate potential to develop or maintain these skills with steady
support are well suited for SIL. Participants who express a goal to move out of the family home, live with
peers, or establish a more independent living arrangement may also find SIL support helpful. In such
cases, the NDIS considers how the current supports of the participant help them achieve their goals and
whether SIL is a reasonable and necessary support in achieving them.
Aastha Community Services delivers person-centred SIL support that aligns with participant’s
individual needs and goals. As a registered NDIS SIL service provider, we work collaboratively with
