NDIS and Mental Health: Exploring the Available Supports

Aastha Community Services

Taking care of our mental health is important as it directly influences our overall well- being and quality of life. Disabilities that can result from the mental health conditions of an individual are called Psychosocial disabilities. People living with psychosocial disabilities need reliable and continuous support. While the clinical services are accessible through the mental health system of the country, the NDIS provides funding for supports that are non- clinical in nature. This includes recovery-oriented supports that improve the functional capacity, independence as well as social and community participation of NDIS participants with psychosocial disabilities.

An important mental health support item funded by the NDIS is called Psychosocial Recovery Coaching. Psychosocial Recovery Coaches provide support with mental health recovery for eligible individuals with psychosocial disabilities. Recovery Coaches have extensive knowledge about mental health as well as a deep understanding of the NDIS system. It is also expected of the Recovery Coaches to spend quality time with the participants and their families to understand their goals as well as their disability needs. Participants will be able to make informed decisions regarding their mental health support with the help of a Psychosocial Recovery Coach. Since the NDIS recognises lived experience as a valuable form of expertise, participants can choose Recovery coaches who have personally experienced the journey of mental health recovery. Participants can also benefit from the expertise of learnt experience Recovery Coaches who have all the necessary qualifications and competence to help them with their recovery.

Aastha Community Services believes that participants with psychosocial disabilities should have access to timely and consistent mental health support to enable recovery. We can help you connect with experienced Psychosocial Recovery Coaches who can help you understand the supports available to you and work with you to develop personalised recovery plans.
