More Than a Break: How STA Builds Independence and Confidence

Aastha Community Services

Short Term Accommodation (STA), including respite offers more than just temporary accommodation for individuals with disabilities and their carers. It is an important NDIS disability support that opens the door to personal growth, skill development, and renewed confidence. Funded under the NDIS, STA provides support and accommodation for a short period away from the usual home environment. While it’s often used when the participant’s usual carers are unavailable, the broader impact of STA on participants’ independence and self-esteem is what makes it such an effective support.

For many participants, stepping away from the familiar surroundings of home presents an opportunity to explore new experiences. Whether it’s learning to manage daily routines with less assistance, building social skills through group activities, or simply navigating a new environment, each experience contributes to boosting the confidence of participants. The NDIS recognises this, often funding STA when it supports the participant’s goals of skill-building, community participation, or improved functional capacity. STA is
especially beneficial for those aiming to increase their independence. It allows individuals to try doing things differently or more independently, with just the right level of support in place. These short breaks can act as stepping stones toward greater self-reliance. STA funding includes personal care, accommodation, meals, and activities designed in collaboration with the participant’s provider. Participants typically receive funding for up to 28 days per year, and they can choose how to use it, whether in one stretch, over weekends, or in shorter blocks. To be eligible for STA support, it should relate directly to the participant’s disability, contribute to their goals, promote community participation, and offer value for money. NDIS may consider how much support a participant’s informal network can realistically provide and whether STA offers a sustainable and supportive alternative.
