Maximising Your Time in STA: Activities and Programs for Personal Growth

Aastha Community Services

Short Term Accommodation (STA), including respite, is an NDIS support that provides people with disabilities a temporary place to stay, typically ranging from a few days to two weeks. STA support includes accommodation, meals, personal care, and access to engaging activities. Often referred to as ‘respite,’ STA also offers relief to caregivers, giving them time to rest and recharge while knowing their loved one is well cared for in a safe, supportive environment. STA stays are an excellent opportunity for participants to work on their independence. Away from their usual home environment, they are encouraged to take part in a range of activities that focus on personal development, socialisation, and recreation. From skill-building workshops to fun outings, STA environments encourage participants to engage, learn, and evolve.

Short-Term Accommodation settings often offer structured programs that focus on enhancing essential life skills. These can range from workshops on communication and interpersonal skills to programs teaching budgeting, meal preparation, or household management. Engaging in these programs not only builds independence but also instils a sense of accomplishment and confidence. Physical and recreational activities offered in STA are designed to balance fun and health. Depending on the facility, programs could include yoga, dance, swimming, or outdoor games. These activities improve physical health, reduce stress, and boost mental well-being. NDIS support workers will be there with the participants throughout their stay to help them with their disability-related needs and enable them to access all the activities. STA also an opportunity to meet new people and build lasting relationships. Group activities with other STA participants can enhance social skills and improve communication, making participants feel more comfortable in social settings. These social activities can include something as simple as a shared meal to a community outings and movie nights.

While STA is often associated with taking a break, it can be much more than just time off. It’s a valuable opportunity to rest while still engaging in enriching activities. With a range of engaging activities, personalised care, and a focus on building social connections, Aastha Community Services ensure every participant’s experience is enriching and meaningful.
