Home and living supports are the NDIS supports that help a participant live at home safely, confidently, and as independently as possible. Living independently with the help of NDIS support can look very different from one participant to the next. Individualised Living Options (ILO) is an NDIS home and living support that helps participants shape a living arrangement that fits their life. It is designed for participants who want more say in how they live day to day, where they live, who they live with, and how supports fit around their routines and goals.
Individualised Living Options (ILO) support does not fund the home itself. It’s the support arrangement that helps the participant live in the home environment they choose. Instead of being placed into a standard model, participants design an ILO plan that reflects the life of their choice. ILO supports may include personal care, help to build skills and independence, and support with daily household tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry.
Depending on the participant’s needs, it can also include help with decision-making at home, building and maintaining connection with others, or supports that help participants manage emotions or behaviour. ILO is typically funded in two stages.
Stage 1 is Exploration and Design, where participant explore options, clarify what support they need, and develop a service proposal that explains how supports will be delivered and monitored.
Stage 2 is Supports, where ILO plan funds the arrangement described in the proposal. One of the
biggest strengths of ILO is that it recognises that support doesn’t only come from paid workers. A well-designed ILO can include a blend of NDIS-funded supports and informal supports, such as help from family, friends, neighbours, or community networks. The NDIS funds support that is directly related to disability needs and meet funding criteria, while unpaid supports can complement the ILO arrangement in practical, sustainable ways.
