Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of support funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) that helps people with disability live as independently as possible in their own homes or shared accommodation. SIL can fund help with personal care, getting ready for the day, meal preparation and cooking, cleaning, establishing daily routines, medication support, and supervision for personal safety. It can also cover support to act on a behaviour support plan and to build social skills. The NDIS doesn’t buy or rent homes for SIL participants except in very specific cases where Specialist Disability Accommodation is also included in the plan. But the right combination of skilled SIL support workers and personalised routines help participants live more confidently in their chosen home.
Supported Independent Living (SIL) provides participants the freedom to choose where and with whom they live, and which provider to use. In a shared arrangement a SIL participant may share one support worker with another participant at some times, or there may be two workers supporting a small group, depending on needs and ratios. The service agreement will set out the supports participant will receive, how they will be delivered, responsibilities on both sides, prices, how changes are made, how disputes are managed, and how supports will work if there is a vacancy in the home. The comfort of a SIL home comes
from the ‘choice and control,’ predictable routines, respectful staff, and supports that fit the person. SIL homes are designed around the principle that safety comes from both environment and support. While the home itself may be owned or rented separately, SIL- funded supports ensure that participants feel secure in their surroundings. Everyone deserves the chance to live with dignity, confidence, and comfort in their
own home. As a registered NDIS provider, Aastha Community Services can offer Supported
Independent Living (SIL) services that focus on enabling participants to live safely and independently.
