From Shared Living to Greater Independence: Understanding Accommodation Options

Aastha Community Services

The amount of support a person needs at home can change over time. Someone who currently relies on regular assistance with meals, personal care or household routines may gradually develop the skills and confidence to manage more tasks independently. For NDIS participants and their families, understanding the different accommodation and support options available can make it easier to plan for these changing needs. From shared living arrangements to temporary accommodation and more specialised housing, each NDIS support option serves a different purpose.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) provides regular assistance with daily tasks such as personal
care, meals, household routines and community access. It is often provided in shared living arrangements. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is purpose-built housing for eligible participants with very high support needs. SDA relates to the home, while SIL relates to disability support.
Short-Term Accommodation (STA) offers temporary stays with support, while Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA) provides a temporary home while participants wait for longer-term housing.
Each option serves a different purpose, helping participants receive appropriate support whiledeveloping confidence, everyday skills and greater independence over time, at their own pace. There is no single accommodation arrangement that suits every NDIS participant. Some people value the companionship and support available in shared living, some others may prefer greater privacy and independence. Participants and families should consider factors such as accessibility, location, compatibility with housemates, level of daily support, personal goals and opportunities for community participation before making a decision.

At Aastha Community Services, we work with NDIS participants and their families to understand their individual needs and explore suitable support and accommodation options.
