Choosing the Right ABI Support Provider Under the NDIS

Aastha Community Services

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) refers to any brain damage that occurs after birth and is not caused by a congenital or degenerative condition. This type of injury can result from events such as trauma, stroke, infection, substance abuse, or a lack of oxygen to the brain. ABI can significantly impact a person’s cognitive abilities, memory, behaviour, emotions communication, and functional abilities. The NDIS provides support to individuals whose ABI leads to a permanent and substantial disability that affects their everyday life.

Participants with ABI have reported notable benefits from the NDIS, including greater choice and control over their lives and increased engagement in community and social activities. However, achieving these positive outcomes often depends on having the right supports in place, making it essential to choose knowledgeable and experienced providers who understand the challenges associated with the condition. ABI often affects memory, behaviour, decision-making, and communication, so it’s important to work with providers who understand these challenges and can adapt their services accordingly. A good provider
should offer experienced staff, customised support plans, and flexible services that grow with your evolving disability support needs. The right provider should not only offer practical support but also focus on building independence, confidence, and community participation over time. Participants in SIL make up just 15% of ABI participants aged 18 and over, yet they account for 44% of total payments, highlighting the intensity and complexity of support needed. If an ABI participant requires Supported Independent Living (SIL), the provider should have proven expertise in managing complex care needs, including behavioural support and 24/7 assistance if needed. In addition, ABI participants may also benefit from working with a plan manager. Plan-managed participants can access both registered and unregistered providers, giving them more choice and flexibility. A skilled plan manager can help connect participants with high-quality, ABI-experienced providers, track their budget, and ensure their plan aligns with their goals.
